Back Pain Relief Print E-mail
Back pain is more than just a pain in the back.  I can also be a pain in the neck, in the shoulders, in the legs and it can most certainly be a pain in the butt.

Back pain can originate in one spot, but the sensation can follow along the spine, across the back and even down into the buttocks and thighs.  Back pain is unpredictable and unrelenting.  It can disrupt your life at home and at work, robbing you of the ability to perform daily tasks and enjoy recreation.  That's why it's so important to understand your situation, and find the right back pain treatment.

For most people, episodes of back pain tend to get fade within two weeks to two months.  During this 'healing period', your body strives to recover from the recent strain it has endured.   During this critical time, it's essential that you receive appropriate therapy for back pain relief.

Conservative treatment options can bring welcome back pain relief, while serving several other purposes:

* Condition the back
* Decrease muscle spasm
* Assist in managing issues related to back pain, like depression and sleeplessness

Back pain therapy is divided into two basic categories:
Chiropractic:  performed by a registered chiropractor, physical therapist or other healthcare professional
Physical Back Pain Therapy:  easily performed by the patient at home, alone or with the help of friends and family.

Physical back pain therapy is further divided into two more categories:  active (involving physical exercise) and passive (using modalities).

Passive Physical Back Pain Therapy

This class of physical back pain therapy is called "passive" because it applied to the patient, as opposed to the patient taking an active role in his or her therapy.  This type of healing requires the use of one or more modalities:

* TENS Units: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator (TENS) units are used to apply electrical stimulation to the back in order to modulate the pain. The stimulation overrides the painful signals that are sent to the brain, resulting in back pain relief.

* Iontophoresis:  This type of passive therapy involves the application of steroids directly to the skin.  An electrical current is then applied, causing the steroids to migrate under the skin.  Once in place, the steroids have an anti-inflammatory effect, reducing swelling and easing pain

* Ice and/or Heat Packs:  These common choices of modality are most often used for passive physical back pain therapy, particularly within the home.  How much relief is actually achieved will depend on several factors. Some patients find that heat packs work better at reducing back pain while others consider ice packs as more effective. Either of the two may be used, or both may be alternated.

* Ultrasound:  This form of deep heating involves the application of sound waves to the skin where they penetrate into the soft tissues.  This method can be affective in relieving acute pain, and may even speed up muscle healing.

Active Physical Back Pain Therapy

Used in addition to modalities, active physical back pain therapy is an important tool for conditioning the body and rehabilitating the spine.  The patient should pay particular attention to the shoulders, back, legs and hips when performing these exercises.   It is also essential to stretch or perform warm-up exercises before every active physical therapy session.

Back pain doesn't have to be a pain in the butt, or the neck or even a pain in the back.  With a proper therapy regime, you'll find soothing back pain relief and will back on your feet in no time.
